By definition, Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administers by laying on hands and can be learned by anyone. This is an ancient practice that is increasing use today.
As dissatisfaction on the current medical system grows, and the fear of the untold side effects of medicines growing with it, people are turning to alternative healing methods as treatment and/or mental treatment. One of these claims is that Reiki can heal illnesses such as Bipolar Disorder.
Can Reiki heal bipolar disorder? The answer is no. Bipolar Disorder is a brain condition that causes unusual and extreme mood-swings, fits, energy activity levels and the inability to carry out day-to-day tasks. Bipolar disorder affects every aspect of the human behavior. There are four (4) basic bipolar disorder;
- Bipolar I disorder
- This is characterized by manic incidents that can last up to seven (7) days.
- Some symptoms are so severe that the patient might need immediate hospital care
- Bipolar II disorder
- Pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes, but not full blown like the one above
- Cyclothymic Disorder
- Also known as Cyclothymia, is defined by numerous periods of hyphomanic and depressive symptoms lasting for at least two (2) years.
- Unspecified Bipolar and related disorder
- Bipolar disorders that do not match the three categories above.
There are very little studies on the relationship between the reiki and bipolar disorder.
Though Reiki may not be able to heal the Bipolar disorder, it is a great tool to heal those who suffer from it. And it is still deemed a wonderful alternative therapy for a person who is suffering such illness, without the uncomfortable side effects of medications. Though it may be unproven, some research say that human contact can help stabilize hormone production. One of such is the clinical trial conducted by Dr. Adina Goldman Shore in 2004.
Shore’s findings conclude that, those who received Reiki treatment had lower retest score for depressive symptoms. Though the final results said that, “effectively reduce negative symptomatology regardless of the expection.. .”.
Reiki therapy relaxes the state of mind of a bipolar. This is the same as eliminating and washing out the negative energy /forces inside a manic depressive individual. By soothing the erratic mood changes by relaxing the mind and body of the person with this illness, the hormonal production and imbalance is reduced.
Reiki is an interesting treatment due to its claim in the biofield energy to rebalance and aid in natural restoration. And the natural, non-invasive and lack of negative side effects of the Reiki healing makes it seem like a miraculous source of treatment. Studies like Dr. Shore’s provides evidence that Reiki does aid in lessening stress and reducing physical pain and mental illness; however the studies still fail to provide explanations for the physiological reason behind Reiki Healing. Therefore dubbing and enrolling to such treatment and therapy must still be done so with caution.
